SAMRC Collaboration

Multi-Pathogen Surveillance Project

A collaborative initiative between IPGH and the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), monitoring a wide range of infectious pathogens through wastewater-based epidemiology. This approach provides valuable epidemiological insights by detecting and tracking disease-causing microorganisms at a community level.

Pathogens Under Surveillance

🦠SARS-CoV-2
🦠Salmonella
🦠Cholera (Vibrio cholerae)
🦠Mycobacterium tuberculosis
🦠Shigella
🦠Human Adenovirus
🦠Norovirus
🦠Rotavirus
🦠Influenza A & B
🦠Hepatitis A & E
🦠Sapovirus
🦠Astrovirus
Why Wastewater?
Early disease detection before clinical reports
Community-level surveillance without testing individuals
Cost-effective outbreak preparedness
Tracks antimicrobial resistance markers
Informs national and global health strategies
